MSBA Recognizes Lighthouse School Leaders

The Mississippi School Boards Association (MSBA) recently announced that it will recognize 39 Mississippi school districts on November 13 as 2012 Lighthouse School Leaders.  This recognition is awarded in three categories to districts that reach the highest levels of student achievement.

MSBA's Beacon Award recognizes Mississippi's "A/Star" school districts.  The 2012 Beacon Award districts are

  • Clinton Public Schools
  • Enterprise Schools
  • Pass Christian Schools


The Lantern Award recognizes "B/High Performing" districts with no schools below "C/Successful."  The 2012 Lantern Award districts are:

  • Amory schools
  • Bay St. Louis-Waveland Schools
  • Biloxi Public Schools
  • Booneville Schools
  • Choctaw County Schools
  • Clay County Schools
  • Corinth Schools
  • Covingston County Schools
  • Forrest County AHS
  • George County Schools
  • Grenada Schools
  • Itawamba County Schools
  • Jackson County Schools
  • Kosciusko Schools
  • Lauderdale County Schools
  • Long Beach Schools
  • Monroe County Schools
  • New Albany Schools
  • Newton County Schools
  • Ocean Springs Schools
  • Oxford Public Schools
  • Pearl Public Schools
  • Petal Public Schools
  • Pontotoc County Schools
  • Poplarville Schools
  • Senatobia Schools
  • Stone County Schools
  • Tishomingo County Schools
  • Tupelo Public Schools
  • Union County Schools
  • Union Public Schools

The Torch Award recognizes "Successful" districts in which 90% or more of the students participate in the free and reduced lunch program, there are no failing schools, and the district has at least on "B/High Performing" school.  The 2012 Torch Award Districts are:

  • Clay County School District - West Clay Elementary
  • Holly Springs School District - Holly Springs High School and Holly Springs Junior High School
  • Laurel School District - Nora Davis Magnet School
  • Lumberton School District - Lumberton High School
